The New York Public Library has performed a public service by releasing into the public domain over 180,000 images and items from the library’s Digital Collection. The library has been working on digitizing its collection for some time and has now offered its items for public use, so that “everyone has the freedom to enjoy and reuse materials in almost limitless ways.”

If you support the efforts of such an undertaking, the library does accept donations and is also on Twitter @NYPL.
